Filing Resources
Official nomination forms and petition requirements for Harrison County candidates
Party Affiliated Candidates -Democrats/Republicans
- Minimum 50 valid signatures
- 70 recommended (some signatures may be invalidated)
- Candidate Information must be completed on each form
- The candidate must select their party affiliation (Democratic or Republican)
- The candidate must be registered with that political party at the time of filing
- The candidate must remain affiliated with that party through the primary and general election
- Must be submitted with the Notarized Affidavit of Candidacy and bound together (stapled or binder)
Official Nomination Petition for Primary Election Form
Prescribed by the Iowa Secretary of State https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/pdf/candidates/nompetprim.pdf
- Must declare the candidate’s political party affiliation
- Candidate must be registered with that party at the time of filing
- Must include the candidate’s residence address
- Must include the office being sought
- Must confirm the candidate meets eligibility requirements for the office
- Must be signed by the candidate
- Must be notarized
- Must be submitted at the same time as the Nomination Petition
- Must be bound together with the Nomination Petition (stapled or binder format)
Official Affidavit of Candidacy

- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be a resident of Iowa
- Reside in Harrison County (for county offices)
- Be at least 17 years old (must be 18 by the General Election)
- Not be a convicted felon unless voting rights have been restored
- Not be currently judged incompetent to vote by a court
- Not claim the right to vote in another location
Independent/NPPO Candidates
- Minimum 50 valid signatures
- 70 recommended (some signatures may be invalidated)
- Candidate Information must be completed on each form
- The candidate must not be registered as a Democrat or Republican at the time of filing
- If someone is currently registered Republican or Democrat and wants to run as NPPO, they would need to change their voter registration before filing
- Must be submitted with the Notarized Affidavit of Candidacy and bound together (stapled or binder)
Official Nomination Petition for Non-Partisan Office Form
Prescribed by the Iowa Secretary of State https://sos.iowa.gov/elections/pdf/candidates/nompetpartisan.pdf
- Must check “Not affiliated with any organization” on the petition form
- Must be registered as No Party Political Organization (NPPO) at the time of filing
- Must include the candidate’s residence address
- Must include the office being sought
- Must confirm the candidate meets eligibility requirements for the office
- Must be signed by the candidate
- Must be notarized
- Must be submitted at the same time as the Nomination Petition
- Must be bound together with the Nomination Petition (stapled or binder format)
